Professor Bill Fischer of IMD on Strategic Innovation
Tuesday, July 10 2007
Arvetica visited professor Bill Fischer at the leading business school IMD, Switzerland, to talk about innovation. Bill is program director of the “Driving Strategic Innovation” program at IMD and also teaches “Orchestrating Winning Performance”.
In the webcast Bill reminds us that innovation is not a goal in itself (particularly in more conservative organizations like private banks). He stresses that there must be a reason to innovate, for example, driven by clients, or driven by revelations about how an organization operates inside. He also underlines that innovation won’t happen on its own and that it is based on a strong leadership commitment.
As to Switzerland’s innovation capacities, Bill pointed out the country’s surprising combination of an innovative culture (usually more casual) and its reputation for craftmanship and solid, dependable and reliable work.
